There was a woman at the TCEQ who would return my smile and nod each and every time I gave one when we passed one another in the hall. She and I never actually worked together, so this greeting was our only communication with each other.
Then one day, she was gone. As we learned of her sudden passing, I remember thinking that just two days earlier we had nodded and smiled at one another like normal; I had no idea it would be our last friendly encounter. Acknowledging others with a friendly greeting is big in my family—to this day, my father still waves at each car that he drives past on our back road in PA. She had left her mark on me probably without even knowing it.
Several of her friends and colleagues have worked very hard to develop the Gulf Coast Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association (AWMA) Marsha Hill Memorial Scholarship in her name. In order to fund this, they are holding the 3rd Annual Marsha Hill Classic Golf Tournament at the Clear Creek Golf Course on Friday, April 19th, 2013. All proceeds will go towards this scholarship, which is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing studies in environmental science, engineering, geology, or earth sciences at any Texas college or university.
